Beneath Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, is a decommissioned particle accelerator, the Tevatron. This accelerator would have placed us as the global leader in particle physics. Funding was pulled, and thousands of scientists were devastated as they had to continue working near the abandoned remains of the accelerator tunnel where they would have conducted their experiments.
